Northern Cyprus

About Northern Cyprus – Northern Cyprus is a ‘self-declared state’ on the island that is only recognised by Turkey. For the rest of the world it is part of the Republic of Cyprus. (See Cyprus country guide). Like the rest of Cyprus, property prices have been depressed for some years and overseas buyers are taking advantage of the fact that prices fell by as much as 50 per cent between 2010 and 2015. Northern Cyprus is often favoured because it has a reputation for being an unspoilt area with fabulous beaches and ecological preservation of the landscape.

About Northern Cyprus

Capital: North Nicosia
Currency: Turkish Lira
Language: Turkish

Northern Cyprus is a ‘self-declared state’ on the island that is only recognised by Turkey. For the rest of the world it is part of the Republic of Cyprus. (See Cyprus country guide) Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the northeast to Morphou Bay and Cape Kormakitis. Its southernmost point is the village of Louroujina. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia the island’s largest city and capital of both sides. But don’t let that put you off- there are many reasons to choose the northern part of this beautiful island, especially the fact that it is still relatively unspoilt.

Northern Cyprus economy

Tourism is a major driver of the Turkish Cypriot economy. This part of the island regularly has over one million tourists annually and makes up 8.5% of its GDP. Casino tourism has also grown to become a significant contribution to the economy in Northern Cyprus. They were first opened in the 1990s, and have since become very popular with visitors from Turkey and the rest of the island, where casinos are banned. This has led to huge investments in the casino sector.

Northern Cyprus culture

The northern Cypriots are genuinely very friendly and helpful. Many of their customs are from a mix of the cultures that have swept through the island over the centuries. Although Cypriots are Muslim, their religion is important to them but they don’t feel the need to necessarily visit a mosque on a regular basis. Cypriots will not feel offended if visitors don’t necessarily understand basic rituals on visiting someone’s house for example. Museums and art galleries are good places to gain an insight to the culture as are the many local festivals.

Location and price

Like the rest of Cyprus, property prices have been depressed for some years and overseas buyers are taking advantage of the fact that prices fell by as much as 50 per cent between 2010 and 2015. Northern Cyprus is often favoured because it has a reputation for being an unspoiled area with fabulous beaches and it is known for its eco-tourism.

The main areas that attract overseas visitors are Kyrenia, with its numerous hotels, entertainment facilities, vibrant nightlife and shopping areas. However, if you prefer solitude and relaxation, you can purchase a house in one of the suburbs surrounding Kyrenia. Some popular suburbs are Catalkoy, Lapta, Karsiyaka and Alsancak. Osankoy and Bellapais are closer to the mountains. Famagusta, a beautiful university town, is also popular with overseas buyers, and has some very modern luxury developments at Iskele. Other areas worth looking at are Lefke and Guzelyurt.
