If you have set your heart on living in a traditional Spanish ‘pueblo blanco’, with narrow, winding streets that are usually also steep since most pueblos are built on mountain or hilly terrain, window boxes awash with bright geraniums and an air of having gone back in time, Mojacar in Almeria, might just tick all the boxes for you.

Get Value for Your Money in Mojacar

With the Sierra Nevada mountains providing a striking backdrop –and an opportunity to go skiing—the pueblo overlooks the Med and is surrounded by newer urbanisations before dropping down to the seaside resort of Mojacar Playa.

In the early days of Mojacar’s discovery by the international crowd, it attracted bohemians and artists: for instance, the late Jimi Hendrix was a fan of Mojacar. It isn’t an artist’s destination these days, although it still appeals to the buyer who has an ‘independent’ mindset, and doesn’t simply follow the crowd. Part of the reason for this is that it is less accessible by air than other areas of Almeria, and there are fewer flights to Almeria airport than to Alicante or Málaga.

This does mean you get value for your money here, which is a worthwhile consideration and local estate agents report that it is a buoyant market, especially for British buyers. But it is not a British enclave, you will also find plenty of Dutch, Belgian and French residents in Mojacar.

In terms of property, here is something for all tastes. The old town for example, offers traditional village houses, while Mojacar Playa has a variety of bright, new apartments and townhouses. And, there are numerous villas of many sizes for sale at excellent prices, especially of you venture farther afield into the surrounding villages., such as Vera.

It attracts a more upmarket buyer, with many Madrileños favouring the area, and the mayor of Mojacar has been working hard at improving the infrastructure and making it more attractive to overseas buyers. There is plenty to do here, with golf courses nearby, weekly markets and an article in The Telegraph claimed it is “equal in interest and culture to Tuscany or Bretagne.”
